Tsuruoka karate
Sensei Masami Tsuruoka was the first to introduce karate to Canada. He is considered to be the founder of Canadian karate.
Tsuruoka Sensei studied Chito Ryu karate under Sensei Chitose, who was a student of Shotokan’s founder, Gichin Funakoshi, often described as the father of modern karate. Tsuruoka Sensei was influenced by both the Chito and Shotokan karate styles to form the style the Tsuruoka organization studies today.
What is karate?
Karate was developed centuries ago as a means of self-defense used by weaponless farmers protecting themselves against sword-carrying warriors and bandits. In fact, blocking an attack is the first move of any kata, or prescribed series of movements learned in karate.
At the Tsuruoka Kai Karate Do, we carry on that same teaching, promoting the use of karate for self-defense and not aggression.
